Creaking sound - rear shocks?

Ok guys went out to the car today and opened up the rear to put something in the boot. When I closed the boot there was a loud creaking sound which seemed to come from the shocks area? Pushed the back up and down and it sounded like an old bed. Took the car for a spin and when I returned checked it again and no creaking sound at all. Went out to the car tonight and it has returned. So once again took it for a spin and it's gone again? Anyone any ideas?

you sure it's not just the boot making the noises

More than sure it's not the boot, the noise is too loud for anything from the boot to make. I've been away from home now for a week, working and the girlfriend hasn't mentioned any sort of noise since it last happened. Keeping an eye on it to see if it returns at any stage? I don't know if it has any connection with having the rear springs removed and replaced the week before of not? Replaced the originals with lowering springs which unfortunately didn't work out and had to put originals back on?
