Wheel bearings

by Robs-se » Sat Apr 28, 2007 10:43 am

When driving above 50mph in a straight line i am getting a rumble coming from drivers side fron wheel ares. if turning slightly to the right on bends this disappears but not when going right round bends. It seems to decrease in volumes when deacellerating but then the wheels vibrate through the steering wheel although no vibration on acellerating since new tyres and wheel balancing.
I have non of the above symptoms when driving about town.

Is this a sign of a knackered wheel bearing?

Yeah it sound pretty much like the bearing is on its way out, they not that much to buy a bit messy to fit, If it is on its way out get it changed asap i left mine on the back of the cavalier for weeks then i regreted it when the wheel came off taking the back brakes with it and it cost me alot more with recovery and getting a garage to sort it out.

any local motor factors, or vauxhall dealers. You have to take the whole front suspension assembly has to come off which can a pig.

The hardest part is usually undoing the track rod ends, and getting the old bearing out.

would just take the hub and your bearings to a garage and ask them to fit them ..cost you about £20, and its a lot easier as they will have the press, trying to do them with a hammer is not the best way

oh and you mighht be better to take the abs sensors off..if you can

Gotta agree with Fraz, I'm a tech and I would'nt like to do a front one at home.

right looks like a trip to local garage, see if he can sort them out, will get him to check cv too while he at it.
