Wishbone help urgentt
Today i tried to torque up the rear wishbone bolt to Haynes
specification. Slackened it off and then tightened with with the wrench
After it tightened a little the bolt then started spinning. it has now dropped out
so it looks like the internal thread has gone.
How do i rectify this. can i use a bigger bolt, or a shorter one even
Some one please help me before i decide to get rid of the car
Cheers

think the tread on the inside of the hole was damaged somewhat.
When i decided to torque it up i loosened the bolt to start afresh
but when it just tightened before the torque wrench had chance to click
the bolt just started to spin. took it out and looks ok. but the old bolt
back in but this wouldn't tighten. eventually when i repositioned the caron the
drive to put the other car behind it i found the bolt lying on the drive.
was wandering it i put a slightly shorter bolt in this might do the trick.
If i was to put a longer bolt in would the end stick out somewhere to put a nut on
the end of it

Steve
I certainly have. Just drilled out a hole in the footwell ( not my best work) to fix my wishbone problem. the thread in the captive nut is now non existent. The correct bolt will only protrude through about 10mm not enough to fix a washer and nut to it as its also slightly tapered. I have an old 8v head bolt which i am going to trim down and find a nut to fix, as i can not find a suitable bolt anywhere, including engineering specialists. I will have to use this as a tempory solution until i can source a more suitable bolt.
Just as well i had to get the carpet up to do this as the footwell is rather soggy, and experience with the old SE means it can take a while to get this sorted. Anyway had to cut out the foam stuff to dry it out and replace later with some carpet tape.
Will get some pictures of my handy work tomorrow.
Also looks like the thread was stripped a while before i had the car as the wishbone that came off was not original although the passenger one is.

If this helps anyone in future i have taken some pictures of what i have done. the first one shows the original tapered bolt sticking through the captive nut. as you can see not enough to put a nut on it.
The second shows a 100mm bolt with a nut on the top. Please excuse the untidy hole cut in the floor pan but desperation took over and as i punched the hole through at an angle from underneath, lost where i was supposed to cut. Anyway all sorted now (hopefully)
Hope this will be of some use to those that have the same problem at some time.
