Is my alternator on the way out?

Any electrical issues

There's a whirring sound coming from the left hand side of the engine which gets louder when the revs increase. I took the auxiliary belt off and ran the engine for a few seconds and the whirring disappeared so am I right in thinking the alternator needs replacing?

Could be the alternator, or the tensioner roller. Have you tried giving them a little squirt of lube? Obviously avoiding the belt, and the internals of the alternator.

Right, just come in from putting some lube on, left the car running for 5 minutes and there's no immediate improvement. The missus is taking it out later so will see if it's better when she comes back.

mine does it, but it need the belt replaced because it slips slightly.
Try a new belt

I swapped the alternator with the one on my other ecotec which was running fine and the sound is still there - how difficult is a belt change as it runs through an engine mount?

Will be looking into it then, might end up taking it in if I don't get if fixed before I go on holiday.

Fixed it in the end, the top bolt on the tensioner housing had come loose :)
