intermitent ECU light

I have an intermitent ecu light problem.

Every now and then the light will come on and the car acts as if its missing (slight judder or sometimes dies all together).

It also seems to be getting worse, it judders so much on times that it kick's it out of gear. Seems to be worse when it's dry and fine when it's wet.

Could it be the crankshaft sensor?

Also getting a slight fuel on times smell when this happens.

It was the crankshaft sensor, also had a blocked breather pipe. All fixed now, thanks for the advice.
