Hand brake - again

by Robs-se » Wed Jan 30, 2008 12:35 am

The usual - parking on a hill facing upwards car rolls back, need to put in gear.
Today i did a bit of fine adjustment, brake on 6 notch, wheels still turn so adjusted using the internal wheel.
Now the car wont move forward even when 1st gear engaged and brake on but will move backwards when reverse is selected.
What am i missing or doing wrong? any ideas?

Sounds like the brake linings need a look at or the drums

As per haynes, but the wheel would only lock in the forward position, so with hand brake fully on (6th notch) gave the wheels a little tweek to see if that helped.

problem i found was that with the road wheel off and adjusting the brake, when trying the wheel it locked both ways because of the little area that would move ie the drum. On fitting the wheel and then trying the road wheel would move in both directions, this is when i gave the interior wheel a tweek to see if this helped at all. now it locks in a forward motion and not in reverse.

ok sounds like you've done it slightly incorrectly.. or i'm mis-understanding, i believe you should set the rear handbrake "wheel" (the bit thats impossible to see and even harder to turn when you do find it) when you have the handbrake only only the third click or so.. tweek each side up untill the drums become locked, you should then find with the handbrake off they spin ok, and with the handbrake up on click 4 or 5 it holds really well.

Had the drums off yesterday and as i expected one of the pins had come out and gouged away most of the meat on the shoe.
Have now replaced shoes and rebodged the pin fixings by putting the pins in from the back. Hopefully will hold until i can get the back plates done.
All working ok now

I always leave a car parked in gear, whatever I'm driving. Just in case the handbrake fails!

As i did a while back after borrowing my mothers car.
She later drove it through the drive gates
Same with my other half, she never checks it's in neutral before starting it

One of our old neighbours used to have a drive that sloped up to his house. I think you know where this is going already.

One morning he woke up to find his car smashed into a lamp post on the opposite side of the road. I've always parked in gear since then.
