Oil Pressure & Voltmeter gauges inactive

Any electrical issues

Oil Pressure & Voltmeter gauges inactive

by greyblue » Wed Oct 01, 2008 9:20 pm

In my 1997 Calibra V6 the voltmeter and oil pressure gauges read zero all the time. Is there a set procedure to identify the problem? The car is not modified in any way.

Obvious thing to check first would be fuses

Never heard of that one. Did they just suddenly pack up or were they like that when you bought the car?

Thank you for your helpful suggestions, which amounted to checking the fuse and confirming that the connector is still in place. Both as you say, are obvious avenues of investigation.

Of course I had already thought of these possibilities, but ... how do I check the fuse (which one anyway - and where is it located within the array of fuses in the box?);

Also, how do I go about checking if the connector is still in place (is there a prescribed removal procedure for the panel or do I just dig it out with a screwdriver blade?)

These are the things I need to know. They may be obvious to the experts, but not all Calibra owners are blessed with such knowledge.

Thanking you again.

prise the gauges out with a flat blade (up to you what you use) though take care you don't mark the plastic..they are not in that tight so just gently

there should be a small White connector that plugs into the rear...should be obvious if its not right in

dont think it will be a fuse as more than one thing would not be working...fuse 8 is the one though and that does the Radio, clock interior light ..and a few other things

Thank you everyone for your further useful suggestions - I think I'm much better prepared to look into the matter now.

As I only bought the car in August 2008 I am only now beginning to drive it in the dark, so, to be honest, I can't say I have noticed whether the dial lights illuminate with the rest of the dash. I will check today.

Again, I've only recently noticed that the gauges weren't working. They probably never have worked since I bought the car, and I haven't noticed because there have been so many other issues with the vehicle, needing to be attended to.

So, thanks again for your assistance and I'll keep you informed as I progress with sorting out the gauges.

I have the same problem on my V6 as well, have checked the fuses and connections. I am trying to get my hands on wiring diagrams as well, ideally electronic versions if anyone can help, ta

Never seen an electronic version so maybe this will help.

Thanks to recent contributors to this thread.

The Voltmeter and Oil Pressure dials do not light up with the rest of the fascia lights. Everything else lights up OK, so it suggests the fuse is not blown because the Voltmeter and Oil Pressure gauges are on the same fuse as the Courtesy lamp, Luggage compartment lamp, Hazard warning flasher, Dual info display, Radio and Trip computer - which are all definitely working.

Have you prised the gauges out and checked the connection ?

Thanks for your interest, RobbieV.

No - I haven't checked to see if the connection is good because despite two attempts I have not yet succeeded in prising off the panel. I'm trying to 'go easy' so as not to damage the surrounding plastic. I will try again with a wide-bladed screwdriver so as to spread the load better on the surround.

It may be of interest that I discovered the boot lamp didn't work and on closer inspection I found that it wasn't connected. As soon as I pushed the plug in to the back of the lamp, everything was OK. It seemed as though it never had been connected at the factory. The previous owner was a lady with no technical interest at all, so it wouldn't surprise me if she never thought to do anything about investigating the boot light not working.

I've a feeling the same may be true of the Oil Pressure & Voltmeter gauges - they may simply never have been connected at the factory. Anyway, I'll soon know for sure and I will keep you informed.

Thanks again for your interest.

Non-connection of the gauges is the only thing i can think of as to why they don't work.

Use a thick piece of card between screwdriver and plastic and just lever out the gauges, don't worry to much they will pop out :)
