If you can get the engine started you can just see what voltage you are getting from the gauge below the stereo head unit - if alternator is working it should be reading around 14V, if not working then it will not be higher than 12V.
If it ends up being that which has gone have a look online at recon'd ones, I had to replace mine a while back and found one on eBay for £65.
