v6 top strut mounts please help asap

by spoon » Sat Sep 04, 2010 2:20 am

hello,

i fear that the strut mounts on my 1998 v6 have lost their shape. after driving 7,500 miles in the continent in the last two months the gap between the top cap and strut dome (sorry tired, i cant rememeber the technical name) is 9mm. (it used to be 4mm, bearing in mind that i have the modified washer kit fitted from factory) has doubled. having spoken to vauxhall they say that the v6 top mounts are different to all other models and have different part numbers, sadly they are no longer available...

problem; when ever i go around a corner the wing sits on the tires even at speeds of 20mph. the car has been lowered 30mm. could there be another underlining problem? i previously had NO problems at all.

my questions are;

anyone know where i can find new ones because i have spent a long time on the internet with no luck.
2nd, what is the difference? height? strength? between 2.0/turbo and v6 top strut mounts. 3rd, the modified washer goes on top of the strut bush and not between the bearing and strut bush??? in-case that has somehow damaged something if i put them back in the wrong place???

anyone help please

thanks in advance

I would of thought the V6 would be different due to the added weight over a turbo. I could be wrong (and usually am)

I thought they were all the same top mounts, i just bought calibra top mount and they worked on a turbo, i never asked for a certain calibra model

the turbo is the heavyest one of them all due to the 4x4 stuff, from memory 16v about 1200kg, v6 is about 1300kg and turbo 1400kg ( not exactly though )

i would also say the turbo is heaver and i also thought that they where all sthe same across the range cant see why they would be diffrent and if the are the wroung ones will probaly still be better (just wont last as long) then the old ones you have on

thanks for your replies but the v6 has a heavier front end. f25 gearbox 10kg lighter than f28, v6 engine (complete with anc. dry) is 52kg heavier than turbo (complete with anc dry).fact! these figures excludes fitment of a.c. i checked i.e eiback suspension (as i have them fitted) the v6 springs that they produce are made to handle an extra 40kg over the turbo suspension.

also, the v6 wish bones are different to all the other calibra models. been to vauxhall and looked on the epc.

can anyone help r.e the strut mounts?

the figures with the car weights are gross kerb weight not axle weight!

ALL rear springs for the calibra are the same as 880kg, even the turbo model,
front springs

2.0i 8v 885kg 30mm drop
2.0 16v 885kg 30mm drop
2.0 16v 4x4 885kg 25mm drop
2.0 16v T 940kg 25mm drop
2.5 v6 980kg 30mm drop

i have already been thinking that i have to fit so called non v6 top strut mounts on and see what happens. i do not think that i have any other option

i have non v6 top struts and lower arms on the Drain and have no probs with them, i also checked epc about the arms but if you buy the individual bushes they are all the same it dosnt make sence to me, i still think useing new all be it not v6 ones they will still be better than the old v6 (if they are V6) ones

i also have 16v springs on the turbo and they are fine most of the time

the bushes are the same as you state but, its the size/offset of the wishbone that is different, i.e the lower balls joint is further in towards the sub-frame. speaking to the likes of gema motorsport and other opel specialists in germany they say the lower wishbones are different because the extra weight of the engine changes the camber.

i still have to old/original wishbones so i will compair them. i am interested to know if there really is a difference or if it's just hearsay...

in the 7,500 miles driven in 2 months the inside 2cm of the tires have worn out nearly to the nylon. the rest of the tires are ok.

on my previous 16v calibra, also lowered 30mm i had no major problems. the tires lasted 35,000 miles, 3 years.

i had a standard v6 when i done the conversion on the redtop and i compared the wishbones from the v6 and the redtop and they were exactly the same, and yes on epc part no,s are different, but upto date epc does say on the 2.0ltr wishbone nls,and use the part no for the v6 wishbones

I've also been doing some Research into New Wishbones for My V6...

According to the 'Suppliers Listings' some were compatible and some weren't...
So I bought them from the Supplier, who Listed them as 'Suitable for V6'
but I'll be putting them on soon... Only then will I know if there are any good or not!!!
