As Tazz says, the problem is not normally the sump but you have to get the exhaust away to get clearance to remove it.
Getting the bolts undone either at the downpipe/manifold joint or the manifold/head joint can be easy but plan for the worst. Use plenty of Plusgas and let it soak in in advance.

Forgot to say, good s/h sump, freshly painted £25 posted.
Autovaux is the best place I've found to get the one part baffle/gasket.

Luckily i fitted a new exhaust last year front to back and its only done 100 miles so hopefully that will be fine. Do you have to disconnect the oil pump hoses as well from inside? just been reading the haynes manual. It states that its a difficult job, but we all have to challenge ourselves dont we.

Ok as long as you are good on your back and can avoid drips
After unbolting the sump and wiggling it off, the baffle plate/gasket will remain in place. You may decide to just replace the sump at this point
If not, to get the baffle plate off you have to undo two bolts that hold the pickup pipe in place and a baffle plate bolt. Quite straightforward.
Assembly is the reverse. The pickup pipe O ring is usually re-usable.
Not sure what they mean by oil pump hoses, the NE does not have an oil cooler.

All going well so far. Got front pipe off, got rust in me eye, u p s dropped the sump and gasket off at 6pm. removed most of the bolts out the sump but have to remove a plate off the bottom of the clutch to get at another two. enjoyin this finish the rest tomorrow. cheers GreyDJ

Its the first time i have done the sump pan. All done now just need to fill it up with magnatech n try. The old sump didnt look too bad from the inside i bet theres another problem. Thats what happens when you leave a car standing for five years. By the way Steve woz that you with that 3.2 NBR edition and the hair do? been reading Total vauxhall billing pics. Ill be there nxt year

First job I had to do on my old 8valver was change the sump... Its easy to do, just make sure you get it up in the air enough to work under it, be very carful with the exhaust fixings when you undo it, I managed to get all bolts undone but one that decided to shear off... other than that the sump just unbolts... while you have it off get a new o-ring on the pick up pipe...
