v6 rev limit
v6 rev limit
Anyone come across this one?
In cold weather all is fine, but when the ambient temp. gets much above 20 the engine won't do more than about 2K revs. I thought it might be the air intake sensor, so I changed that, but to no avail. Any suggestions?

Re: v6 rev limit
No difference whether engine is hot or cold.
There is no error code, either - the engine electrics warning does not show when this happens. I read the memory with an op-com module, but no fault code was there.

Re: v6 rev limit
I'm down in the deep south - Southampton. The fault first showed up on a sunny day in Bournemouth. It was a slow drive home! Next morning it was revving fine, until the day warmed up.

Re: v6 rev limit
Sorry - I haven't been able to work out what the TC motor is. Obviously not twin carb, it has four camshafts so it's not twin cam, not a turbo cooler as its a v6. Could you enlighten me?

Re: v6 rev limit
OK - I've fiddled with the TC motor. With the engine off the connecting lever can be moved smoothly though its travel. With the engine ticking over it moves through about 5 degrees and then I can feel it coming up against the tip of a rotating cam or similar inside the motor stopping further movement - the lever vibrates as the motor rotates. Any help?
While I'm in TC territory, I had assumed that the traction control was switched on by means of the button near the base of the gear lever. Research into the manuals I have suggests that I have that the wrong way round, and that TC is ON when the car is started. The TC light comes on if I then press the button. It does not flicker at any point to suggest a fault.

Re: v6 rev limit
TC is on all the time, you do need to press the button to switch it off.

Re: v6 rev limit
It has been suggested to me that it could be the fuel pump. That fits most of the symptoms - like the limiting when I try to accelerate - and the temperature bit may just be that the hot day pushed a poorly pump over the brink. I'll do some checking up.

Re: v6 rev limit
I have replaced the fuel pump and filter. No difference. I now have a spare (if used) in-tank pump and filter. The next thing I shall attack is the throttle potentiometer. Watch this space!
