The V5 or the vin wont tell you anything. It looks like an LE to me, I doubt anyone would have gone to the trouble of a full respray but should be easy to tell.

I think a couple were registered in 1997 but as Mark said the numbering wouldn't indicate its a late one, maybe vauxhall kept hold of it before registering.

Its been sat around for a while so anyone thinking of buying it should be prepared to get their hands dirty especially if it needs a new box.

The LE does indeed have two serial numbers.

The one engraved in the plaque, in the format 00nn, and the one on the sticker over the 00nn number. The first must have been in the factory by Opel, the second as part of the limited 50 LE marketing strategy by Vauxhall. The plaque may even have been used by GM or Opel for other limited editions. It is unlikely that either number would have had any link to an actual range of VIN of the cars, especially the stick on label.

The LE Register on here's number order is theoretically based on the sticker numbers but many will actually be 00nn numbers as the stickers come off. Hence the duplicates that appear. My LE had the real 16 label but 0038 (if I remember right) underneath.

As this particular car has the 0014 engraved number we have no idea what number was put on it by Vauxhall. It could quite easily have been one of the missing high numbers in the Register. Which would fit the R reg. Also a dealer could have sat on it to wait for the R reg.

Well chaps I've been to look at this, 6 hour round trip to my least favourite part of the UK... where cockneys roam freely in their Range Rovers and gay people were invented in the 80's.

Anyway. Good points...

1. It has a Coscast head
2. Irmscher bumper (?)
3. Boot floor and sills look pretty tidy

Bad points:
1. It's been in a shunt, o/s and rear have been repaired and looks like the whole car has been painted bar the roof. O/s trim stuck on with what looks like bathroom sealant, o/s door shut badly repaired, they didn't even line the door catch up properly so you can see where it's painted. Plenty of orange peel visible (especially bootlid), will be worse when cleaned up I suspect. Paint probably has more defects I couldn't see due to the poor light and dirty body
2. Cheap tyres all round, discs are lipped, obviously been stood a while and will need attention
3. Roof lining / inside of sunroof mouldy
4. Bottom of doors rusty, arches rusty
5. Seller knows little about Calibras. He thinks they made a Cav Turbo LE, and Calibra Turbo LE's have window tints as standard. Also reckons he's had it from new, yet it's also had 3 previous owners? Also said when the txb blew he "was going to make it RWD". Strange bloke.

Overall I think it could be made tidy, with considerable expense. But... I wouldn't consider buying it without driving it first and making sure it pulls and stops in a straight line and doesn't crab over bumps. He reckons it's HPI clear - which if it is suggests a cheap backstreet repair (off the books), which would tally with the s***e paint job.
