have you ever thought that just maybe the oil pressure sender unit might be faulty ...it also does the light

The tapping could take longer to go away in the cold as the oil takes longer to warm up in these temperatures.

Also (sorry if ive missed it) what grade are you using and how many miles has the oil done?

It was tapping today and never stopped tapping, there was 2 taps for about 5 minutes, then one went away.

Its the same oil thats in it since ive had the car, so Steve will know i hope :)

However, i have had a sniff in the oil filler cap..... slight smell of petrol in there, and the oil does look alot thinner as its dripping off the dipstick, and the engines now cold again..... so thats a new lead for me! :eusa-pray:

Well.... ive done an oil change and still no proper pressure... the warmer the car got the less the pressure dropped, until it nearly hit the red... so ive left it at i might just have a F****d pump :(

If i get it a wee rev upto 2k or so, it gets upto 2 maybe 2.5 bar sometimes, but the tapping just wont go away now.

Was hoping to put her under a roof tomorrow running sweet and i could concentrate on other things.... looks like she will be going in to have the engine out and sorted, (which may have its upsides) but still, agro i didnt want. :violin:

if the tapping is coming from the racker cover its no doubt a sticky lifter, so there is 3 options as far as I can see

A. replace with new lifters
B. take out old ones and clean them up
C. try running a product through the engine theat is designed to cure such things

the low oil prresure light might be unconnected and could just be a false reading due to a faulty sender unit ...you could alswys just fit the oil switch rather than the sender unit and see if the light still comes on

what oil did you use? did you also replace the filter ??

I used 10/40 oil, and no i didnt replace the filter, it was literally to see if i could get any more pressure from it, but didnt work... I do need replace the filter i know , but after an expensive week off ive ran outta funds to get a filter... (sad i know) haha

Whats the difference between the oil switch and the sender unit? the gauge was not linked up until yesterday, hasent been since i have owned the car, and the light was on the day before that when on idle and slowing down..... and by christ that sender unit is a f****r to get to!

The tapping is definately a sticky lifter, yesterday there was 2 and after 5 mins of running it one went quiet, today there was only 1. There is oil getting to the top end as when i open the cap its spitting at me. So i dunno.... well lost!!

well if the filter is blocked it would bypass the filter and thus get dirty oil round the engine, its about £3 for a filter so worth doing ...might be why the lifter is sticking as it has had dirty oil passing around

just that the sender may be faulty, fitting just a switch might prove that if the light subsequently goes out with just a switch ...easier to get hold of an oil switch that another sender unit that is all...and it not that hard if you go from underneath the car

well a sticking lifter is not just going to sort itself out if its really blocked or losing pressure ...unless you run some sort of oil cleaner through the engine ..or replace the faulty one

as said the low oil warning light may just be a coincidence since the light and pressure is all through the one unit hence why I said to try and eliminate that first
