Front Fog Light Bulbs H3

by EddeyDancer » Wed Mar 27, 2013 12:52 pm

As Front Fog Lights, are not Standard on Head Lights in AUST...

I was just wondering what the majority over there, have fitted...

I've currently got 9 SMD's fitted, but they're not up to My Standards...

I like the look of these...

Was wondering what the length of these bulbs are, from the round steel base to the top of the bulb?

As the Maximum Length of the H3 bulbs that will fit, has to be 40mm or less!

It's mainly about 6am, and about 2-3 times a year!

But I sometimes use them as Daytime Drive Lights...

So that supplier got back to me...

"40mm exactly header size"

what does that mean?

Being that the Osram Night Breakers worked well or me in the Low Beams, I decided to get the H3's for the Front Foggers...

The 9 SMD Bulbs currently fitted, don't give me the light output that I was hoping for...

You can't use fog lights unless you can't see more than one 100m in the UK

There are Laws here too about the use of Fog Lights, but they are not enforced very aggressively...

Being that they are actually located in the Headlights, and not fitted lower on the bumper, most Police here won't even know!!!

I have to replace one of the Aim Adjust Motors anyway, so it's a good opportunity to replace the H3's as well...

Sorry but that's not quite right. You can also use fog lights in falling snow and I don't think the visibility distance is in the law, it just says fog.

Also legally I am not sure that the Calibra's fog lights are actually 'fog' lights in law as they are the same height as the headlights so above the 600mm limited 'fog' light use limit.

Oh I can see this being a start of a debate

on the hight

This is covered in alignment of lights.
Again RVLR 1989 part IV schedules 4 (Dipped beam headlamps) and 6 (Front fog lamps) says the following.
Dipped headlamps

Max height 1200mm min height 500mm, max width from edge of vehicle 400mm
Colour white or yellow, nothing else allowed.
Alignment when the vehicle is at its kerbside weight and has a weight of 75 kg on the driver's seat. That setting shall be a single figure (note 1)-
lamp height <850mm 1-1.5% minimum downward angle,
lamp height >850mm 1-2% (note2)

Front Fog lights
Max height 1200mm, min height no restriction, max width from side of vehicle 400mm (when used in place of dipped headlamps)
Colour white or yellow, nothing else allowed.
Alignment, same set up as headlamps, eg kerb weight 75kg etc but the top of the beam to be aligned with a 3% angle below the horizontal.(note 3)[/i]

Oooops got that a bit wrong. Shows my age, the minimum height for headlights, before they became foglights, was 24" which I assumed was carried across when EU metric came along. But no, it was lowered to 500mm.

Highway code rule
Rule 133 of the current Highway Code states: - 'Use fog lights when visibility is seriously reduced’
This generally means when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 ft). You MUST NOT use fog lights at other times'.  Remember to switch them off when visibility improves.
So relating figures to actual distances is not only very important regarding stopping distances, it is very relevant to the above rule.
It can be very irritating when rear fog lights are left on in good visibility.  Naturally they are quite bright and it is not so obvious when the driver is braking. I think some people do genuinely forget to switch them off, (where has their concentration gone?) I think some people put them on as they probably feel more secure and others may feel it keeps tailgaters at bay.
No doubt there are many more reasons why people leave fog lights on; but they may not be aware they are breaking the law.  This could lead to them being pulled up by the police and who knows what that could lead to.
Like I have said, leaving fog lights on is irritating; used correctly, they are an invaluable asset..
