What a pain in the arse!!

by Matt Bartlett » Fri Mar 29, 2013 8:19 pm

Whilst removing the turbo today I sheared two of the manifold studs. Not a big deal really, drill a hole in each broken stud and extract it with an easy-out. Not that easy as it turned out!! Lets put it this way, I now have two broken easy-outs stuck in the engine block!! GRRR!!

The broken studs are completely inside the engine block or sticking out a bit?

I had the similar problem with 8mm studs which were sticking out of block about 10mm and successfully removed them using the tool like this

Yes, sorry in the head. There's nothing at all sticking out unfortunately so had to go for the "drill down the centre" option. Thing is, the easy-outs were literally brand new!! Dont really wanna take the head off as the thought of timing the engine up on re-assembly worries me a bit. But if thats the only thing I can do.......

Try drilling most of the stud out. Say its a 10mm stud use a 9.5 mm dill bit then retap the threads.

Easy-out still stuck in the hole unfortunately. Has anybody heard of such a thing as a mobile machinist? If there is, perhaps I could get them to come to me rather than the head to them.

doubt it as the tool required to get an Easy out ...out, are going to mean its going to have to be clamped and then usually they burn it out and then re drill and helicoil it, so cant really do that in place

if you can get the easy out bit out from the studs try and hammer in a torqx bit and if possible get some heat on it and just be patient in getting it out, plenty of wd 40 and just work it in and out.

Get the easy-out off, then soak it in WD40 a few times a day for a couple of days

Then after heating up the head around the stud (hobby torch is good for this) use two nuts locked together to unwind it.

Works for me almost every time.

Got my head back at the weekend, minus the easy-outs! Cost the grand sum of £15!! Mates dad owns his own machining business and did it in his spare time. That's what you call lucky lol!! Gasket sets, timing belt kit and a few other bits ordered so should be busy for a little while...
