Wiring Up an Aftermarket Head Unit

by EddeyDancer » Thu Apr 18, 2013 2:43 pm

I'm trying to match up the wiring, for a Clarion Head Unit...

I bought an ISO Adapter, but it's not totally identical wiring...

The 2 x Green, White, Grey and Purple wires are a match...

The ISO Plug has Yellow, Blue, Red, Orange and Black...

The Stereo wiring has Yellow, Blue, Red and Black...

Any suggestions on which goes to what?

Much Appreciated...

ALSO:

It's a used Clarion Head Unit...

The Yellow Wire from the Stereo has a Fuse Capsule, and seems to have been joined to the Red Wire by the previous owner...

yellow is usually a switched 12V supply
red is a permanent 12V
Black will be an Earth
Blue is a switched feed (usually going to an amp etc )

You usually swap the red and yellow over for a Calibra (red of stereo to the yellow of the car connector and yellow to red) ...it will still work but it will lose the memory of any stations stored (or the clock) hence why someone has joinecd the red and yellow

Oh and on a Calibra the earth is Brown and the Ignition live is black ...I presume you do still have the ISO plug on the original wiring in the car??

I used the Adapter, which plugs into the 'Original Loom' keeping it intact...

But on the other side, it's not a direct fit into the Head Unit...

So some chopping and connecting, will be required...

The ISO Plus Wiring is marked:

Yellow = 12 V Battery/Constant
Blue = Power Antenna
Red = 12 Volt Ignition/Switched
Orange = Illumination/Dash Light
Black = Chassis Ground

The ISO Plug has Yellow, Blue, Red, Orange and Black...

The Stereo wiring has Yellow, Blue, Red and Black...

I'm not sure what wire goes to what, as the Plug has 5 wires, and the Head Unit has 4...

I don't even listen to music when driving, but I'm wanting to replace the Original Head Unit, mainly because the Tape Deck looks out-dated, and brings down the rest of the interior...

I had to swap two wires around to get an aftermarket working.. but its been a while.. I was getting power but it would lose the settings... Just get the standard ISO diagram.

There are three wires to look for. Ignition, earth, and another to the battery to hold settings. I think as standard the configuration is not ISO standard with the battery going to ignition and vice versa, hence you get power but lose the settings.

This Head unit was made in 1997, and I've seen a few on eBay in the USA...

I'll try my luck with it this weekend...
