Petrol filler rubber removal

by Adrian » Wed Sep 10, 2014 5:59 pm

I'm preparing to tackle some rust that's got going in the fuel filler area:

Is it OK to pull the big rubber collar off the filler tube to get at the bodywork underneath? It seems kind of stuck tight. Can't see anything else holding it after removing all the visible screws.

you need to remove the metal ring that the petrol cap goes onto as well
BETTER TO HAVE A CALIBRA AND NOT NEED ONE, THAN NEED A CALIBRA AND NOT HAVE ONE!!!

I've changed that rubber mould, inside the Fuel Filler Cap before...

All I removed was the 4 screws, filler cap flap and the locking mechanism plastic piece...

It took about 2 mins to remove the rubber neck, and about 1 hour to fit the bugger back on...
I sprayed some WD-40 around the area, and gently eased it off with gradual pressure...
It gets 'Very Dirty' under the rubber mould, so give it a good clean up while it's off...

Handy Tips:
Get the Bucket, Sponge and Chamois ready to clean the area up!
When Replacing the New Part, lubricate the connection point with Vaseline or Olive Oil
Start the fitting at the Top, and work around the sides aligning the Fuel Cap Locking Mechanism!

If You start fitting it at the bottom, You'll never get it back on!!!
