Steering Wheel Vibration over 60mph

Any issues relating to suspension, steering and brakes.

Hi

This is a pain in tha..... As the title describes, I get steering wheel vibration over 60mph that goes at approx 75mph.

The car has 17inch wolfrace alloys that have just been balanced for the second time. First was at a fast fit place with no joy, then took it to a alloy wheel & performance specialist that balanced them much finer that the other guys.

As I drove home there was no vibration at all! Well impressed.... UNTIL half way home, the vibration came back exactly as it was before. I think this happened after I had to brake hard??

The car has had new discs fitted recently.... Any ideas, this really kills the cally experience!

Thanks

Are you using sticky weights?

Have you checked that the weights haven't dropped off?

Just what I was gonna say K

When I get my wheels balanced, I usually take a note of how many weights are on each wheel, as they do have a tendency to drop off over time, especially if whoever fits them doesn't clean the contact area on the wheel before sticking them on.

I would say if you're not happy, regardless of whether it was OK for a little while after you left the garage, take your car back straight away, as hopefully they won't try and make you pay again as it's so soon after, perhaps even suggest what Kieran said about the weights, as it's certainly possible.

And not to scare you, but a set of cheap'ish alloys I had actually had a manufacturing defect in two of the four wheels, resulting in them bending out of shape over time, so if you ask the garage to check for buckles etc. that wouldn't be a bad idea as well, as it's something I've known garages to overlook when balancing your wheels unless you specifically mention it.

Hope this helps

Mate you are probably missing sprigots

these go in between the allow wheel and make it sit centre onto the hub

if they are not there as soon as you brake the wheel will move and it will not sit straight on the hub

It won't be your balancing

Hi, I have checked the wheels and all looks good? Weighted on the inside rim and sticky weights in the middlish of the wheels...

Thanks for this but the wheels all have spigots that are machined specifically for the alloys and all 4 are on the car

One question, when I changed the brake discs, the front drivers side had a problem with the "retaining screw"... It would not go in and the head of the screw got mullered. So the disc is quite loose until you bolt the wheel on... Its clutching for straws really

Anyone any thoughts? I got a feeling if I go back they will check the wheels and they will be fine?

ALSO

The drivers side front when taking the wheels off, engine running but in neutral, the driveshaft turns? Not sure this is right?

Thanks

hiya, if you think this vibration started after you had to "brake hard" i think it may also be brake problem...you mentioned you had new brake discs fitted recently...how long ago?
if you have to brake sharply ,too hard or just brake alot from high speed before you pads and discs have had a chance to bed in, you have had the chance to of damaged/warped them so you get a wobble/vibration which only shows at a certain speed.

also it is quite norm on most front wheel drive cars for the driveshaft to turn whilst engine idling with a wheel off

hope you get it sorted and are back to smooth driving soon

nobodys mentioned the tracking??

lumping new wheels on upsets a car what size are the tyres, have you got the offset correct etc etc

Hi, the disc were changed about 400 miles ago, hopefully they should have bedded in? Also there is no vibration whilst applying the brakes, only the vibration that is already through the steering wheel... Think that makes sense?

Enigmatic, the tires are 205/40/17, as for the offset, I do not know, is there any way of checking? The car does pull to the left a lil?

I could be that the disc isn't flat on the hub, i had similar on the Impreza when I had a set of disc's changed.

Unfortately both a brake problem(sticking caliper or warped disc) or tracking being out would/could cause this vibration

i'd advise you get the tracking checked...possibly laser alligned then see how it goes from there

Fatboy, Hi

How much did it cost to repair? I think I have the same issue with mine!

Cheers and glad you got it sorted!

Sounds like a shock absorber. When you lift the car up it takes a little while to settle back down again. Thats why you don't notice it at first. Don't bother with a bounce test because it won't work on a cally. Due to the springs (even standard ones) being quite stiff they don't bounce if the shocks knackered. Check to see if any of them are leaking.

Fixxed!!

by sophos9 » Sun Apr 24, 2005 10:57 am

This is all fixed!!!

The wishbone bushes on the drivers side had gone bad, replaced both wishbones and the car feels like new to drive!!
