Oil pressure sensor...Nightmare.!!!

Any electrical issues

by gremlin » Fri Jan 28, 2005 11:51 am

My oil pressure sensor is of the scale.!!

As soon as i turn my ignition on my oil pressure sensor gauge fly’s of the top of the scale as far as it can go. I’m sure its not the real pressure of the engine as that isn’t even running and can only think it is a short somewhere.

Would it be a duff sensor or a short somewhere?

Where would i find the sensor so i can trace the wiring backwards?

Very unlikely to be a duff sensor OR a short.

It will probably be a broken connection on the sensor - This happened to mine.

I got it sorted when I changed the oil as I could unscrew the sensor without oil pi$$ing out.

Its fiddly but you might be able to leave it on and reconnect the wire if you take the O/S wheel off & Jack it up.

The sensor is behind the oil filter. Its a small cylindrical shape, with 2 or in your case probably 1 wire(s) coming from it. I *think* the one your after is green/grey!

Find the connector and pull the wire off. If the reading is still off the scale then u have a short in your wiring. If it stays at 0 then it's probably your sensor.

I've had this trouble on both my Calibra's.
Both time it was cured by cleaning up the connector, which gets very corroded. (It's just an unprotected female spade crimp)

I'm in the club with the buggered sensors too! as mine oil pressure gauge do the same, although sometimes (rarely) when i turn the engine it seems to indicate but when the engine starts always goes to the far end and stays there

I'd be a little concerned if the oil light is coming on. Apart from checking there's oil in the engine, I'm sure someone more knowlegable on here will give a better idea what the problem is.

Have you got enough oil in it?

My gauge goes straight round to the max also. I guess putting the sender on may be a good start in fixing this though! Maybe when the weather improves i will get round to it.
