No Brake Lights!!

It was pointed out to me today that neither of my brake lights are lighting!
I've removed them both from the car and both bulbs are fine. I've also checked the fuses (fuse 7) and thats fine....What else should I check that could be causing this problem?

Aside from a brake ( :roll:

) in the wiring the only other thing it could be is the actual switch itself.

You need to stick your head under the steering column and find the connection for the switch which sits on the brake pedal.

Disconnect the wiring plug from the switch and put a paperclip or piece of wire into it, making a permanent circuit.

Turn the ignition on and if both the brake lights come on then it is your switch that is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Ive bridged the switch and still now joy?

Are there any relays in this circuit? I've had a look at Haynes but the diagrams really confusing??

power to fuse 7 then to switch 8 then to bulbs 9+10. thats the circuit u need to work on.

All the other wires are for the abs and bulbs failure lamp etc.

Ok...I've got power to the fuse....then on to the switch (the one on the brake pedal) Where about do the wires physically go from here?

Was the ignition on?

If so keep the switch bridged, go to the rear lamp (either side) trace the wiring from the brake bulb to the connector.

Make sure you have a feed from the connector, this will mean that there are no breaks in the wiring from the switch.

Re-connect the loom to the lamp, now check to see if you have a feed to the bulb holder. If you don't then the wiring on the lamp is faulty.

If you have a feed to the bulb holder then it could be the bulb holder itself at fault. Try bending the metal contacts out a bit to see if that helps or try to swop it over with another one.

All this ensures that the power is getting as close to the bulbs as possible. When the power stops is where the fault is.

If the bulb holders are ok try swopping the bulbs (if you haven't already)

Might not help in your case, but my faulty left side brake light was eventually sorted by swapping the bulb holder over with a spare I had, mind you I only had one out, not both at the same time...
If I'd tried the replacement holder 1st I'd have saved myself about an hour or two's worth of messing around changing bulbs, holders etc etc (along with the "can I see if that brake light is lit from the other side of the car" scenario..)

Well......
Problem solved. I cant believe I've been such a plank!
After spending my lunchtime tracing voltage all the way down to the rear I found the problem.
Sorry to waste everyones time.....I was checking the wrong bulbs :oops:

That's why when ever I threw the brake switch there was no voltage.
I'll get my coat..........................

don't worry, I did the same thing with the interior light (no one told me there was a bulb in the middle aswell!!!)
